Compatible Garmin watches

Supported families include epix Pro (Gen 2) 42/47/51 mm; Forerunner 265, 965, 970 and 170 Music; fēnix 8, fēnix 8 Pro and fēnix 8 Solar; fēnix 9 and fēnix 9 Pro, including Pro Solar; and Enduro 4. Check the current version and your exact model in the Connect IQ listing before purchasing. Two-button Approach S72 models are excluded.

Open and activate

On the watch, open Activities & Apps and select burnd. Choose a program and press START. First activation requires an internet connection through Garmin Connect or a supported watch connection. Open https://getburnd.app/activate, then enter the watch's six digit code and your Polar license key. Find the key through “Access purchase” in your Polar order email or https://polar.sh/getburnd/portal. Wait for Activated on the watch, then continue.

A code lasts ten minutes. If it expires, request a new code on the watch. If connection fails, check the phone/watch connection and try Retry. A purchase receipt or checkout return alone does not activate the watch. Keep license keys, passwords and codes private. Never send them to support.

After successful activation, valid saved access permits offline workouts. Reopening the app should retain access. A confirmed inactive license prevents future starts; a network error does not cancel an existing workout or prevent saving. If access looks wrong, contact support before buying again.

Training guides

See Treadmill intervals on Garmin for planning and watch readings, or Outdoor intervals on Garmin for GPS and automatic phases. Both link to the routine builder.

Program guides: Sprint · Fat Loss · Stamina · Hills.

Choose a session

Choose Sprint, Fat Loss, Stamina or Hills, then duration, level and Treadmill or Outdoors. Press START on the summary. Every phase advances automatically.

Use Build your routine to compare your settings.

Duration is 10–90 minutes in five-minute steps. A longer session adds short phases before cooldown. Preparation lasts three minutes and cooldown lasts two. Walk phases last 60 seconds; Jog and Run last 30 or 60; Sprint’s fastest phases last 30 seconds. Sprint has at most six of those fastest phases. The other three programs have no compulsory Sprint.

Profile and level

Your Garmin running VO₂max shapes lower levels. Without it, burnd uses all six profile fields for an estimate, or generic starter targets.

Level 25 reaches your treadmill maximum speed and incline in separate phases. Set your own maximums for each activity; your profile never reduces those endpoints.

See the formulas and examples. The level scale is a burnd design choice, not a measured fitness score.

Workout controls

UP/DOWN: switch between coaching and the data page.

START/STOP: pause. Choose Resume, Finish or Discard with UP/DOWN, then START. Discard requires a second confirmation. BACK on Pause stays paused.

Hold UP/MENU: edit a planned target. UP/DOWN changes it. Hold MENU again to switch speed/incline on a treadmill; Outdoors edits speed only. BACK closes editing while the timer continues.

BACK/LAP during recovery: queue a separate 60-second Walk after the current phase. The current countdown does not change. Outside recovery it does not skip a phase. When target editing is open, BACK closes editing first.

Target edits carry through the remaining session within the app's limits; they do not become next-session defaults. Touch does not pause, skip, save or discard. A pause stops the coaching clock; an added Walk increases active time by a minute. You change treadmill speed and incline yourself. The app never controls the belt.

Phone settings

In the Connect IQ Store app, open Device, My Device Apps, burnd, Settings. Save and sync. Labels can vary by phone/device; see Garmin’s settings guidance.

Use Garmin values or manual overrides for VO₂max, age, height, weight, sex and resting heart rate. Choose the activity category by the type and weekly duration of your exercise when using the fallback estimate. Each activity has Easy speed, Max speed and Max incline. Maximums are level 25 endpoints. Edit one field to override it; clear it for Auto.

Treadmill settings include the 20 km/h and 12% or 25 km/h and 15% presets, plus your machine’s maximums. Automatic activity maximums use these values. Indoor targets stay within the machine limits; outdoors shares your activity maximum speed without the equipment cap.

Profile, target and equipment changes wait until the next session. Active and paused plans keep their targets. Units, vibration and sound can update during a workout. Vibration starts on and sound starts off. Starting level is editable in Connect IQ. Duration and environment stay on the watch.

Targets, graphs and readings

burnd shows heart rate beside the phase countdown and a colored edge ring for the whole session’s remaining time. The heading counts every phase from the first Walk, including preparation and cooldown. The ring holds while paused, includes any added recovery and disappears when the session finishes. Heart rate shows -- bpm when unavailable or more than five seconds old. It does not set a training zone or confirm recovery.

Activity-colored speed and incline are planned targets. White speed is supplied by Garmin's activity information. It is not verified treadmill belt telemetry or a promise of short-interval GPS accuracy. Missing readings show --; zero speed or distance can be valid. The watch does not measure treadmill belt incline.

Fat Loss, Stamina and Hills show the entire plan. Width represents duration; height combines planned speed and incline; the dot marks progress. This diagram is not measured exertion, calories or terrain. Outdoors uses zero incline. Added recovery extends the timeline; the dot holds during a pause. Sprint has no graph. The data page shows active time, distance, average pace and available heart rate. Heart rate does not establish that an effort is safe or recovery is complete.

GPS outdoors

GPS starts on the outdoor summary. The static acquisition symbol means searching; a check means a recent usable fix; a slash means GPS could not be enabled. START works while acquisition is incomplete. Coaching continues with missing data, but distance, pace and route records may be incomplete. Treadmill mode leaves GPS off.

Finish and save

At completion, press START on SAVE. Saved means stored on the watch, not confirmed Garmin Connect sync. Press START on DONE to return to the selector. To finish early, choose Finish from Pause and review before saving.

A failed save retains the session for RETRY. Do not discard an activity you want to keep. Sync through Garmin Connect and check watch History if it is missing. After an interruption, check History before assuming anything was saved. burnd can show the last checkpointed active time, or -- if unavailable, but cannot resume or reconstruct an unfinished coaching plan.

Purchases and support

Polar processes the one-time purchase and provides the receipt and license key. For billing or refund questions, use the receipt's contact route or email hello@getburnd.app. Polar's Buyer Terms apply to its checkout; applicable consumer rights are unchanged. Garmin does not manage refunds for developer-selected payment services.

Email hello@getburnd.app with your watch model/firmware, burnd version, program, duration, level, environment, what you pressed and what happened. A cropped screenshot can help. Redact routes, account details and health information. Never send a license key, password or activation code. Our Privacy Policy explains support information.
